The interior of the 1908 Jackson County Courthouse features colorful murals by artist Odin J. Oyen of La Crosse, Wisconsin.  Adorning the interior of the Dome and of the second floor courtroom, the murals depict subjects ranging from Education and Industry to Truth and Achievement. They were executed in oil on canvas in the artist's studio and then attached to the plastered walls (dome and upper part of walls in the Courtroom).

Due to water infiltration (leaking roof) the integrity of the murals was affected (flaking and delaminating paint) and several had begun to detach from their supporting substrated (some of them up to 80%).

The conservation treatment consisted of: 

• Consolidation of paint layer and support (primed canvas)
• Cleaning and removing older or more recent overpaints (1939 and 1974)
• Filling the missing areas of paint
• Inpainting
• Reattaching the detached murals to the plastered walls
• Varnishing with UV protective non-yellowing synthetic varnish

This project involved the painstaking work of restoring the murals to their original splendor, which was completed in December 2006.

This project received a Historic Preservation Award, from the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota, in 2007.
