Sailing Ships at High Sea painting was executed in oil on a gessoed wood panel. At the time of restoration, the Owner of the painting was Beard Art Gallery, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. According to the art experts of the gallery, it was assumed that the author of this painting was British due to the British flag in the painting; the approximate time of execution was in the mid-19th century.

The painting had a diagonal crack, which was inappropriately fixed in the past. In addition, the painting was heavily overpainted and varnished.

RESTORATION CONSISTED OF:

  • Cleaning
  • Removing the overpaints, varnish, and inappropriate repairs
  • Filling the cracks and the missing areas of paint
  • Inpainting, using reversible conservation materials
  • Varnishing with a reversible and UV protective synthetic varnish
